Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced plans to meet with US President Donald Trump this Sunday in Florida, as efforts continue to pave the way for an end to Russia's war against Ukraine.
Zelensky expressed optimism about the discussions, which will likely center around a comprehensive 20-point peace plan proposed by the US, alongside potential security guarantees for Ukraine.
In the meantime, the Kremlin has indicated that continuous conversations are taking place, with senior aide meetings with US officials reinforcing their commitment to negotiation efforts.
Despite Russia's claims of 'slow but steady progress' in talks, they have not addressed Zelensky's proposition regarding the withdrawal of troops from the eastern region of Donbas, contingent on a reciprocal action from Russia.
With Ukraine seeking firm security assurances, Zelensky has floated the idea of establishing a non-militarized 'free economic zone' in parts of the Donbas that remain under Ukrainian control.
On Christmas Day, Zelensky communicated with Trump's chief negotiators, including Jared Kushner, yielding 'new ideas' aimed at ending hostilities, which he characterized as a productive dialogue.
The upcoming meeting at the weekend is expected to cover several critical documents, including those concerning US security support and economic agreements, in light of the ongoing challenges surrounding territorial disputes and the powers governing the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.
Zelensky remains vigilant about the territorial negotiations, asserting that both sides need to make concessions, further complicating the dialogue.
As fighting continues, with reports of casualties from recent air strikes and drone activities, the urgency for peace remains paramount, as both leaders aim for a solution before the New Year.
