In brief
In a concerning breach of diplomatic protocol, the U.S. State Department has confirmed it is investigating cases where an individual or group utilized artificial intelligence to impersonate Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This impersonation involved the dissemination of both text and voice messages aimed at several high-profile recipients, including a governor, a congressman, and three foreign ministers. The agency became aware of these incidents after a memo was circulated among State Department employees last week.
The messages, which were communicated through the encrypted messaging application Signal, raised alarm bells within the department. The memo, dated July 3, revealed that at least five individuals outside the department had received the impersonated communications. According to an official’s statement, the department is aware of the situation and has initiated an internal investigation into the matter. Rubio, who previously served as a Florida senator before assuming his current role, has had a considerable online presence, making his voice and mannerisms publicly accessible. The State Department emphasized its commitment to maintaining cybersecurity and safeguarding its information against such vulnerabilities in the future.
