The coup attempt was reportedly orchestrated by individuals in neighboring Ivory Coast, who aimed to attack the presidential palace last week. Sana disclosed that the plotters intended to sway Burkinabe religious and traditional leaders to gain support from military officers for their plan. This operation, he stated, was to culminate in an assault on April 16, 2025, by a faction of soldiers recruited by Burkina Faso's enemies.
The military government has faced ongoing challenges in securing the country from armed jihadist groups, which currently control approximately 40% of Burkina Faso. Despite promises made by Capt Traoré's administration to enhance security and establish new partnerships, including with Russia, the situation continues to deteriorate with frequent insurgent attacks.
Amid these threats, the government arrested several military personnel, including two officers, who were allegedly involved in planning to destabilize the government. While the Ivorian authorities have yet to address these allegations of hosting coup plotters, the Burkinabe junta has often accused Ivory Coast of harboring its adversaries in exile.
This declaration comes just months after Burkina Faso reported another foiling of a "destabilization" plot against the junta in November. In light of the current political climate, Burkina Faso, along with Mali and Niger, has severed ties with the regional West African bloc, Ecowas, to forge a new alliance, while also distancing itself from France and seeking closer ties with Russia.
