Ugandan football icon David Owori was killed in a robbery outside his home in Kampala, prompting nationwide mourning and protests against violent crime.
Police say 27‑year‑old captain of SC Villa, David Owori, was beaten to death after resisting robbers who tried to steal his mobile phone and other belongings.
The attackers struck him with paving stones before fleeing with his items, leaving him unconscious. He was rushed from the scene to a local clinic and then to a private hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
SC Villa’s statement called the loss a blow not only to football but to the community, noting that Owori was a leader and a friend both on and off the field.
Policetechnical detectives are pursuing leads and have kept the scene preserved to collect evidence.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations praised Owori as a true leader on and off the pitch and the Uganda Cranes echoed that he carried the hopes of a nation.
Parliament observed a minute of silence, and social media posts have called for stronger action against criminals amid rising concerns about violence in the capital.
The tragedy comes only weeks after the death of rugby international Sydney Gongodyo, who was also fatally attacked in Kampala.
