Uganda mourns football captain David Owori after street gang attack

David Owori, 27‑year‑old captain of SC Villa and a key member of Uganda’s national team, was fatally assaulted by suspected robbers outside his home in the Makindye suburb of Kampala. The attack took place on Tuesday night and left him unconscious after being hit with paving stones. He was rushed to a local clinic and then to a private hospital, but he could not recover from his injuries.

Owori’s murder has shocked the entire Ugandan football community. SC Villa’s management released a statement calling him “a leader, brother and friend”, while the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) described him as “a true leader on and off the pitch”.

The national squad’s coaches and teammates expressed their sorrow, citing Owori’s role as a “football star who carried the hopes” of “a generation”. Parliament observed a minute’s silence on Wednesday and urged a swift investigative process.

Police spokesman Rachael Kawala said detectives are pursuing leads to identify the perpetrators. “The scene has been documented and evidence preserved,” she added. The incident raises mounting concerns about violence in Kampala, coming after similar attacks on sports personalities such as rugby international Sydney Gongodyo weeks earlier.

Owori had returned to SC Villa in 2023 after two years in Europe and was part of the team that achieved their first league title in 20 years, earning a record 17th championship in 2024. He was due to be under contract until January 2027 and had participated in the national team’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The tragedy has sparked widespread social media outcry, with Ugandans demanding tougher policing and action against criminals. The loss of a celebrated player is felt deeply across the country, highlighting the urgent need for safer streets and stronger public safety measures.
