UEFA has angrily condemned FIFA’s recent proposal to bring private investment into the World Cup and other competitions. UEFA’s statement decried the initiative as a breach of football governance, declaring that the sport is not owned by any single entity.

FIFA said it seeks to expand football development funding to more than $10 bn, which it claims will grow the game. The plan, however, requires approval from its member associations and has sparked criticism from UEFA.

Sources in the Financial Times and the Times suggest that the proposal could yield tens of millions of pounds for FIFA president Gianni Infantino. UEFA responded that such moves “cross a line that football’s governing institutions should never cross” and further warned that the World Cup is “not FIFA’s to sell.”

These tensions highlight a clash of visions between FIFA’s commercial ambitions and UEFA’s protective stance over the collective interests of European football.
