Former US president Donald Trump has said that the United States will not enter into any joint venture with China to develop or commercialise artificial intelligence technology.
The announcement came during a Washington event marking the launch of the America.gov online portal, an AI-driven hub for federal services.
Earlier this week Chinese leader Xi Jinping visited the White House, and the two governments unveiled a new AI dialogue framework with further meetings slated for November, alongside a communication channel to reduce missteps.
Trump stressed that allowing China access to American AI advances would equate to giving away valuable secrets, adding that the US currently holds a relative advantage that must be preserved.
He dismissed growing concerns about AI safety, calling them a hoax and likening them to the so-called global warming scam propagated by left-wing critics.
A recent poll revealed that two-thirds of Americans see moderate risk that AI could pose a danger, with 44% of Trump supporters favouring a pause on future development.
