In brief

Donald Trump has reversed his earlier pledge to broadcast the firing‑squad execution of Nidal Hasan, citing that many prefer not to see it on screen. The former U.S. Army psychiatrist, convicted of killing 13 soldiers and wounding 32 at Fort Hood in 2009, is to be executed by firing squad. The decision follows criticism that a livestream would provide a stark visual statement on America’s handling of terrorism. Hasan’s execution will still take place as scheduled, but the event will remain private for the public.

U.S. President Donald Trump has pulled the plug on a previously announced livestream of the firing‑squad execution of former Army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan, the man who killed 13 soldiers at Fort Hood in 2009.

Trump, who had initially said he approved of an online broadcast of the death, now says many well‑meaning people would prefer not to watch the event in real time.

“He will die, as scheduled, by firing squad, but this event will not be streamed,” the president added during a statement Thursday.

Hasan’s execution will still take place as scheduled, but the event will remain private for the public, a move intended to avoid a disturbing visual statement about how America deals with terrorism.
