HONOLULU (AP) — An attempted murder trial is concluding for anesthesiologist Gerhardt Konig, who is accused of trying to kill his wife during a cliff-side hike near a scenic lookout in Hawaii. Closing arguments are expected Tuesday, wrapping up a month-long trial that began nearly a year after the incident. Gerhardt Konig has pleaded not guilty.

The alleged attack occurred during a weekend getaway to Honolulu for Arielle Konig's birthday in March 2025, while their two young sons were at home on Maui. According to prosecutors, Gerhardt Konig, 47, upset about his wife's relationship with a coworker, attempted to push her off a steep trail, struck her with a rock, and attempted to stab her with a syringe.

Testimony from the trial, which was streamed live on Court TV, sheds light on the couple's marital issues leading to the hike and recounts differing perceptions of the confrontation on the trail.

Gerhardt testified that he discovered his wife's alleged affair by accessing her phone while she slept. This relationship, described by Arielle as an emotional affair with flirty messages, became a point of conflict during their hike.

Arielle testified that her husband physically restrained her, moving her towards the cliff’s edge. She said she fought back, eventually escaping from him.

Gerhardt, however, claims that Arielle struck him first with a rock, necessitating his self-defense actions. His defense argued that no syringe was recovered at the scene to substantiate the charges.

Multiple hikers who heard Arielle's screams came to her aid, helping her down the trail. The Pali Puka trail, which translates to pierced cliff in Hawaiian, leads to a stunning lookout but is officially closed due to safety concerns.

In dramatic turns, Gerhardt testified that after witnessing his wife crawl away, he contemplated jumping off the mountain, believing his marriage and career were over. He later told his son from a previous marriage that he tried to kill your stepmom, a claim he later denied. He ultimately surrendered to police hours after the struggles. Following the incident, Arielle filed for divorce.
