Former National Football League (NFL) running back Doug Martin has died aged 36 while in police custody in California.

The Oakland Police Department reported that Martin, who played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers among other teams, died following an alleged home break-in and a confrontation with officers on Saturday.

While attempting to detain the individual, a brief struggle ensued, the department stated, adding that Martin became unresponsive and was transported to a hospital, where he later died.

His family confirmed his passing and mentioned that the cause of death was unconfirmed.

It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning, his family communicated to US media, requesting privacy at this time.

In a statement, Martin's former team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, expressed their deep sadness at the sudden loss of the player. From his record-setting rookie season in 2012 to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise, they added.

Born in Oakland, California, Martin was a first-round draft pick by Tampa Bay in the 2012 NFL draft. He had an impressive rookie season, rushing for 1,454 yards and scoring 11 touchdowns.

Martin spent most of his NFL career with the Buccaneers, earning the nickname Muscle Hamster for his strength despite being comparatively short for a professional player at 5'9 (1.75m).

In his later years, he faced challenges with injuries and a four-game suspension in 2016 for violating the NFL's drug policy, which he acknowledged and sought treatment for.

Martin also concluded his NFL career playing for the Oakland Raiders in 2018, which has since moved to Las Vegas.
