In a court hearing in Ensenada, three men were found guilty of the murder of Australian surfers Jake and Callum Robinson and their U.S. friend Carter Rhoad during a surfing trip in Baja California last year.
Police say the men were robbed of their truck in a secluded beach area, then shot in the head and left in a nearby well. The bodies were discovered about a week after the brothers and their friend crossed into Mexico.
The verdict sent shockwaves through the Australian surfing community, where the perpetrators were seen as random victims of a criminal act rather than hate‑crime or familiarity murders.
During the month‑long trial, prosecutors sought over 150 years in prison for each defendant, and the state governor spoke to the media to reassure tourists that Baja remains a relatively safe place to visit.
Survivors and families have raised calls for heightened security at popular beaches, and a memorial vigil was held in the surfing community to honor the victims.
