A 17‑year‑old girl from North Carolina has been charged with murder by aiding and abetting after prosecutors say she recorded a livestream of the 18 May attack on a San Diego mosque that left three people dead.
The girl also published a manifesto from the two teenage gunmen who carried out the shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego. She was arrested last week and indicted by a grand jury on Monday, according to Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O’Neill.
O’Neill said the attack had two aims: “Number one, to kill as many people as possible that day. Number two, to record and livestream the carnage.”
Under North Carolina law, a person accused of aiding and abetting can be held criminally responsible in the same way as the person who carried out the crime. The teenager now faces three murder charges and one count of conspiracy.
Investigators say the two male shooters, aged 17 and 18, opened fire at the mosque, then took their own lives. A security guard and two worshippers were tragically killed in the exchange of gunfire.
The attackers used GoPro‑style helmets to record the attack, and their manifesto contained racist, antisemitic, and white‑supremacist themes. It referenced the Christchurch mosque shootings of 2019 as a model.
The shooter’s arsenal reportedly included around 30 guns and a crossbow taken from a parent’s possession.
