Tanzania Vice‑President Emmanuel Nchimbi Expelled from Ruling Party After Resignation

Emmanuel Nchimbi, the 54‑year‑old Vice‑President of Tanzania, has been expelled from the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party for indiscipline, following his decision earlier this week to resign after 10 months in office.

Nchimbi’s resignation and subsequent expulsion have come amid a series of controversial statements, most notably urging Tanzanians to “fight for a new constitution” – a line that could strain his relationship with President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

He served as the President’s running mate in the disputed 2025 election, which ended in unrest and the deaths of hundreds of voters. Nchimbi’s resignation, announced via a brief letter shared on Instagram, is the first time a Tanzanian vice‑president has stepped down.

Energy Minister Deogratius Ndejembi, 43, has been named as Nchimbi’s replacement and his nomination will now go before Parliament for approval. Ndejembi won’t need to address the specific indiscipline allegations, which the CCM did not detail.

Nchimbi’s resignation will take effect at the end of next week, at which point the new vice‑president will assume office.
