Sydney Daycare Worker Hamish Tait Identified in 329 Child Abuse Charges

A 35‑year‑old childcare worker, Hamish Tait, has been named in a case involving 329 criminal charges for alleged sexual abuse of 136 children over a 16‑year period. The offense counts include the production of child abuse material, filming a person in a private act without the child’s consent, aggravated sexual use involving minors under 14, and intentional sexual touching of children under 10.

Tait worked or attended 62 early childhood education facilities in Sydney between 2009 and 2025, primarily in the city’s north‑west suburbs, including four childcare centres and his own private business. He was arrested in July of last year, but his identity was withheld until a court order was lifted Monday, part of the police’s effort to identify victims and contact families.

Police noted they had reached out to 121 families affected by the alleged abuses but are still working to identify 22 additional victims. AFP Acting Commander Luke Needham emphasized that “any form of child sexual abuse is confronting and horrific, especially when the perpetrator is a trusted caregiver.”

The AFP has set up Operation Moonbi, a website identifying the childcare centres where Tait worked and offering support for affected families.

The case follows a series of high‑profile childcare abuse scandals across Australia. In 2024, performer Ashley Paul Griffith admitted 307 offences at Queensland childcare facilities over 20 years, and last year, Joshua Dale Brown was charged with numerous abuses at Victoria childcare sites, prompting calls for over 1,200 children to be screened for sexually transmitted infections.

The investigation into Tait’s conduct draws attention to the ongoing need for vigilance and stringent safeguards in childcare settings.
