Leah Stewart, 35, was mauled by a shark during a morning swim at Coogee Beach in June. The bite caused severe damage to her arms and legs, requiring an induced coma and several surgeries, including the amputation of one arm.
She thanked her supporters in a recent online post, noting that the fundraising campaign has raised over AU$550,000 (US$394,000; £289,000). The raised funds allowed her to recover at home and pursue future medical treatments.
“After what has been an incredibly difficult few months, I’m so happy that I’ve progressed enough to build some independence, and I can finally see some light after all of this,” she wrote. “I want you to know that I feel like I’ve been given a second chance at life, and I’m not going to waste it.”
Her comment acknowledges the overwhelming love and support from family, friends and strangers alike—an “army of love, support, prayers and encouragement” from around the world.
