Sonam Wangchuk ends 26‑day hunger strike, reaching deal with authorities

Sonam Wangchuk, 59, has called off his fast after 26 days of refusing food in support of youth‑led protesters demanding reforms in India’s education system.

In a post on X, the activist explained that he ended the strike “after a long negotiation on various conditions” and to avoid “possible violence in the country”.

Wangchuk had started the protest in support of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), whose members are calling for the resignation of India’s education minister. The activist had already lost 11 kg (24 lb) from the fast before being taken to hospital after being forcibly removed from a Delhi protest venue on Saturday.

The strain has highlighted growing frustration among Indian students and civil society, who say that current policies stifle innovation and equity. The authorities have pledged not to use force against protesters if the deal includes safeguards for public safety.
