Sinners Shatters Oscar Nominations Record with 16 Nominations

The vampire horror film Sinners has broken the record for the most Oscar nominations received by a single film, after being nominated for 16 prestigious awards at this year's Academy Awards.

Previously, the record stood at 14 nominations, and Sinners emerged ahead of its nearest competitor this year, One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which earned 13 nominations.

Sinners' nominated talents include its lead actor, Michael B Jordan, along with co-stars Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo. The nominations also showcase a variety of categories, including Best Picture and Best Director for Ryan Coogler.

Other notable contenders include Timothee Chalamet, looking for his first win after two prior nominations, and Jessie Buckley, who is a front-runner for Best Actress for her role in Hamnet.

Regrettably, Buckley's co-star, Paul Mescal, did not receive a nomination, and the film Wicked: For Good did not secure any accolades despite expectations.

The awards ceremony is set to take place in Hollywood on March 15.

  • Sinners - 16 nominations
  • One Battle After Another - 13 nominations
  • Marty Supreme - 9 nominations
  • Frankenstein - 9 nominations
  • Sentimental Value - 9 nominations
  • Hamnet - 8 nominations

Sinners 'More Than Just a Horror'

Sinners exceeds expectations, breaking the stereotype that horror films often underperform at awards. Set in the 1930s Mississippi, the film follows twin brothers who open a juke joint targeted by vampires. Critically acclaimed, it combines genres and tackles important societal themes.

Losing the Battle but Winning the War?

While Sinners addresses racism in the South, its competitor, One Battle After Another, comments on the current US political climate. DiCaprio's role as a revolutionary facing an authoritarian regime reflects the film's contemporary relevance.

Chalamet Eyes First Oscar

Timothee Chalamet, nominated for his role in Marty Supreme, seeks his first Oscar win, facing off against heavyweights like Jordan and DiCaprio. The Best Actress category sees Emma Stone and Kate Hudson nominated alongside Buckley, who is favored to win.
