Polish officials have confirmed that a missile that struck a field in eastern Poland was most likely a Russian Kh‑101 cruise missile. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said after an inspection of the crater near Tarnawa Kolonia that the wreckage pointed to a Russian missile, and that the object was armed.
The 10‑metre (33‑ft) wide crater was located 92 kilometres (57 miles) from the Ukraine‑Poland border, during a period of intense Russian airstrikes on Ukrainian cities such as Kyiv, Lviv and Kryvyi Hir. No casualties were reported because the missile fell outside a built‑up area.
Tusk, who was in Lublin for the meeting, said that the missile violated Polish airspace and that Poland had advanced protective measures. Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz said around 20 objects were seen near the border overnight and that pyrotechnic analysis was underway.
Ukraine’s acting Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha earlier confirmed that a Kh‑101 had crossed into Poland as part of Russia’s massive strike on Ukraine. The incident has drawn urgency from NATO, which has declared an ongoing close contact with Polish authorities and a readiness to take all measures necessary to defend NATO territory.
The missile was intercepted by an F‑16 fighter jet that detected the object at 03:40 local time, it remained on radar for only a few minutes, and a military helicopter was dispatched to the site. Air raid sirens sounded in Lublin and Krasnystaw because of Russian strikes on neighbouring Ukraine.
Tusk met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Lublin the evening before the crash. In that meeting, the Polish PM stated that Russia’s “massive combined strike against Ukraine” underscored that “Russia’s aggression is a threat to security as a whole.”
The latest incident adds to a pattern of Russian drones and missiles that have landed in Poland since the February 2022 launch of Russia’s full‑scale war in Ukraine. Two Polish farmers lost their lives earlier in the year when a missile that crossed from Ukraine was believed to be a Ukrainian air defence missile reacting to a Russian attack.
