Russia Releases Former U.S. Marine Robert Gilman After Health Crisis

Russia freed former U.S. Marine Robert Gilman, who had served in Massachusetts, after a 2022 arrest for assaulting a police officer on a train to Moscow. Gilman was held in Russian detention for over a year amid reports that he suffered from a severe case of pneumonia, an extreme stupor, and a dissociative state.

According to Russian special envoy Kirill Dmitriev, the decision came on humanitarian grounds, and Gilman was flown by a U.S. aircraft to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday. Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey highlighted the sailor’s catatonic condition and the legal spirals that led to his release.

Reports from Reuters indicate that doctors were attending to Gilman as he returned across the Atlantic. A U.S. official later said that he appears in good shape, and his family is awaiting his transfer to a Texas military hospital. His sister Lexie Hudson publicly thanked former President Trump for his intervention, stating that no other factor would have secured Gilman’s survival.

The event has compounded the strained ties between Russia and the United States, as authorities in both countries face increasing pressure on legal and diplomatic fronts.
