Angry Anderson, rock star who soundtracked Neighbours, dies aged 79

Gary Anderson, famously known as Angry Anderson, frontman of the Australian rock band Rose Tattoo, has died at the age of 79 after suffering a cardiac arrest while on the band’s farewell tour in Europe.

The singer’s most famous solo track, “Suddenly,” became a global hit when it was featured during the wedding of Scott and Charlene in the long‑running soap Neighbours in 1988, a scene viewed by 20 million people in the UK.

Minogue herself had insisted on the song for her character’s wedding and Anderson later described it as “the best song I ever wrote.” After Minogue’s own chart‑topping single “Locomotion” kept “Suddenly” from reaching number one in Australia, the track nevertheless broke into the top three in both the UK and Australia.

Anderson began his career in 1976 with Rose Tattoo, releasing five albums before the group split in 1985. He then pursued a solo career, releasing two albums and continued touring until an illness forced a pause.

The band reunited in 1993 to support Guns N’ Roses on their Australian tour, and after a successful 1998 tour, they were inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame in 2006.

Beyond music, Anderson served the community as a youth advocate, earning a Member of the Order of Australia in 1993 for his charity work.

Following the cardiac arrest, Anderson was treated at a hospital in Europe before returning home to Australia, where his band cancelled nine shows. A joint statement from his family and Rose Tattoo called him “a devoted father and much‑loved bandmate.”
