President Donald Trump confirmed on Tuesday that Indiana U.S. Rep. Jim Baird, a Republican, and his wife are currently recovering in the hospital after experiencing a serious car accident. They’re going to be okay, but they had a pretty bad accident, and we’re praying that they get out of that hospital very quickly, Trump stated while addressing House GOP members during a retreat at the Kennedy Center. While Baird is 80 years old, he was first elected to Congress in 2019 and has been a representative for west-central Indiana.

A spokesperson from Baird's congressional office has not yet responded to inquiries for more details regarding their condition. News of their accident coincides with a period of mourning for Republicans in Washington, D.C., following the recent death of Republican Doug LaMalfa, a seven-term U.S. Representative from California. LaMalfa’s passing, along with the resignation of Georgia Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene, has further narrowed the GOP's control in the House, which now stands at 218 seats against the Democrats' 213.

This situation echoes the tragic 2022 incident where Indiana U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski was killed in a head-on vehicle collision in her northern Indiana district, alongside two of her staff members and the driver of the other vehicle.
