In brief
Kim Seongmin, the president of Free North Korea Radio and a prominent defector, perseveres against illness to share vital news and insights with North Koreans, striving to awaken them from their regime-imposed ignorance.
For seven years, Kim Seongmin has been fighting a relentless battle against cancer that has metastasized to his lungs, brain, and liver. Despite receiving a grim prognosis of just months to live, the 62-year-old North Korean defector remains resolute in his mission to broadcast into North Korea twice daily, providing a lifeline of information to a populace starved for truth amid the strict censorship of the Pyongyang regime.“North Korea has its citizens living like frogs in a deep well,” Kim stated during an interview at his home on Ganghwa Island, near Seoul, where he tirelessly edits and records shows for his station, Free North Korea Radio. His broadcasts aim to awaken North Koreans to the flaws within their political system and the realities of the outside world. For two decades, North Korean defectors, including Kim, have sought to penetrate the regime’s veil of ignorance, using methods like balloon drops or radio broadcasts to disseminate news and entertainment. However, Kim Jong-un's regime is cracking down harder than ever on perceived “anti-socialist” influences, making it increasingly dangerous to access information from the outside. Reports indicate that authorities now conduct house searches and impose severe penalties, including public executions, for anyone found consuming foreign media or who exhibits “South Korean” traits. In the face of his deteriorating health and the regime’s escalating crackdowns, Kim Seongmin persists with his work, embodying a beacon of hope for North Koreans who dream of a future beyond the oppressive walls of their government.
