NEW YORK (RTW News) — In an ongoing battle for justice, victims of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell are urging judges to support the Justice Department's initiative to unseal records from federal sex trafficking cases against the notorious duo.

Annie Farmer, speaking through her attorney, emphasized that transparency is crucial. Only transparency is likely to lead to justice, she stated, underscoring the victims' plea for the release of pertinent records associated with their cases.

The Justice Department's recent request to Manhattan federal judges has reignited this discussion, as they aim to lift secrecy surrounding grand jury transcripts and other critical materials. This comes in light of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, signed by President Donald Trump last month, which mandates the release of extensive investigative materials by December 19.

Victims and their advocates hold that this law represents a significant step towards ensuring accountability for those tied to Epstein and Maxwell's operations. Nothing in these proceedings should stand in the way of their victory or provide a backdoor avenue to continue to cover up history’s most notorious sex-trafficking operation, attorney Sigrid S. McCawley wrote in a letter to the judges.

While the court deliberates on the request to unseal these records, the urgency for victim-centered transparency remains high. According to McCawley, it's essential that any judicial orders encourage the Justice Department to disclose comprehensive information related to Epstein.

Jeffrey Epstein, whose connections spanned the elite, reportedly died by suicide in jail following his 2019 arrest. Ghislaine Maxwell was convicted in 2021 of sex trafficking minors for Epstein and is currently serving a 20-year sentence.

The legal complexities continue as Maxwell's defense prepares a habeas petition aiming to overturn her conviction, with her attorney raising concerns that transparency efforts could affect the fairness of any potential retrial.

Judges overseeing the cases have requested responses from both Maxwell’s team and the victims by set deadlines, vowing to resolve the motions promptly. As the fight for transparency progresses, advocates firmly believe it’s a crucial path toward ensuring justice for Epstein and Maxwell's victims.
