Pupils Face Barbed‑Wire Protection as Israeli Settlers Assault West Bank School
A modest school in the village of al‑Mughayyir, located north‑east of Ramallah, has been surrounded by barbed‑wire fencing after a surge of violent attacks by Jewish settlers. The villagers leave behind a network of outposts and a checkpoint run by Israeli forces that intensifies the danger each day students face.
Last year, six people have been killed in the community, including a 14‑year‑old pupil named Aws al‑Naasan, who was shot outside the school gates in April. The growing tensions underscore the broader reality that all Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are illegal under international law, and many of the ad‑hoc outposts around al‑Mughayyir are likewise illegal domestically.
