BELEM, Brazil (RTW News) — California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his disbelief and frustration on Tuesday regarding the decision of eight senators to break from the Democratic Party and collaborate with Republicans to end the government shutdown. Speaking from the COP30 UN Climate Conference in Brazil, Newsom stated he is alarmed that these senators seem unfazed by the political changes brought about by former President Donald Trump.

“I’m not coming in to punch anybody in the face, but I’m not pleased that, in the face of this invasive species that is Donald Trump, who’s completely changed the rules of the game, that we’re still playing by the old rules of the game,” Newsom said. “And in my core, I’m stunned.”

The group of defectors—seven Democrats and independent Sen. Angus King—faced significant backlash from fellow Democrats for what many perceived as capitulation to the GOP. In response to the bipartisan legislation passed to reopen the government, Newsom's press office described the senators' actions as 'pathetic', urging them against this course of action.

“This isn’t a deal. It’s a surrender. Don’t bend the knee!”, he stated in a post.

While discussing the implications of the shutdown, which has caused delays and hardships for countless Americans, Newsom emphasized the importance of staying alert to the ongoing threats posed by Trump’s administration, noting that many within his own party do not seem to grasp the urgency of these developments.

“I’m really more alarmed than it appears the eight members of my party are in the United States Senate,” he remarked, advocating for a more proactive stance against Trump’s influence.

The conversation comes amid a backdrop of significant political unrest and uncertainty, as many Americans face the impacts of the government shutdown. Newsom is not only striving to position himself as a voice of the Democratic Party but also to assert California's role on the global stage, especially given its status as one of the largest economies in the world, while the Trump administration chose not to send an official delegation to the climate conference.

Through his remarks, Newsom aims to galvanize support within the party and express the critical need for decisive action against the shifting political landscape.
