In brief
The police in Amsterdam have ramped up their efforts to address recent antisemitic incidents, arresting multiple individuals connected to violence after a soccer match between Israeli and Dutch teams.
Five more men were apprehended over the weekend, bringing the total number of those detained in relation to the attacks to eight. The arrested individuals, aged between 18 and 37, face assault charges, and police have called for public assistance in gathering video evidence to support their investigation. The unrest stems from heightened tensions in the city linked to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, particularly following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof described those involved in the violence as having "a migration background," pointing to a broader integration issue within the community. Despite numerous peaceful protests regarding the Gaza conflict in Amsterdam, some events have turned disruptive, threatening public safety. Last week, a protest resulted in damage to the new Holocaust museum, highlighting the polarizing sentiments within the city.On Monday evening, disturbances continued, with riot police confronting groups vandalizing property and igniting a tram fire. Residents have been advised to avoid the affected areas. Additionally, in Antwerp, Belgium, two teenagers were arrested for allegedly inciting violence against Jewish individuals through social media. As tensions escalate, authorities remain vigilant in their response to ensure public safety and address the underlying issues contributing to these conflicts.
