Israel Warns of 'Forceful' Response as Kites Fly from Gaza
Israel has warned Hamas that it will boost strikes on Gaza after reports of kites, drones and balloons launched from the territory.
Multiple kites were spotted near the Israeli community of Kibbutz Nahal Oz, only about 800 m from the Gaza border, with local media noting a further round of sights last week. Israeli military sources claim these were sent from Gaza, possibly to test Israel’s response, although no suspicious or explosive materials were detected.
Defence Minister Israel Katz urged "zero tolerance", saying a kite is treated like a drone and a balloon like a kite, regardless of whether they carry explosives. Residents of Nahal Oz voiced concerns that such tactics could pave the way for incendiary attacks in the future.
Hamas disputed responsibility, describing the kites as children’s toys from displacement camps and labeling Israel’s threat as a pretext the official has used to justify continued aggression. The dispute escalated as Palestinian health officials reported casualties from Israeli strikes on July 24 in Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp and the town of al‑Zawayda, with a four‑year‑old boy killed in a bombing.
With tensions not eased by recent ceasefire agreements, both sides have stepped up operations, underscoring how the use of kites and balloons has turned into a new point of contention in the already‐strained conflict. The latest warnings from Israel highlight the fragile security situation that surrounds all residents and signal a possible shift toward more intense military pressure in the coming days.
