Israel's military reports that the remains of two hostages returned by Hamas on Tuesday night have been confirmed as Arie Zalmanowicz and Master Sgt (res) Tamir Adar. Zalmanowicz, age 85, was taken from his home in Kibbutz Nir Oz during the Hamas-led assault on Israel on October 7, 2023, and is believed to have died in captivity on November 17, 2023. Adar, aged 38, was a member of the security squad in Nir Oz and was killed during the same attack.
The return of these remains is part of a ceasefire agreement brokered by the US, under which Hamas has delivered 15 of 28 deceased Israeli hostages to Israel. Their coffins were transferred to Israeli troops in the Palestinian territory by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which had received the remains from Hamas.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) escorted the coffins back to Israel for formal identification in Tel Aviv. Despite the efforts to adhere to the ceasefire, frustrations remain in Israel regarding the delay in returning all deceased hostages. Hamas contends it is struggling to locate bodies amidst the destruction caused by the ongoing conflict.
As part of the ceasefire and hostage release deal, Israel has released 250 Palestinian prisoners and halted military operations in certain areas. However, violence has erupted sporadically, with both sides accusing each other of violating the ceasefire terms.
Since the October 7 attack, which claimed around 1,200 lives and saw 251 hostages taken, over 68,000 individuals have reportedly been killed in Gaza due to Israeli assaults, according to sources in the Hamas-run health ministry.
