MUSCATINE, IOWA — A fatal shooting in Muscatine on Monday claimed six lives, including two students and a school district employee, in what authorities believe was a family‑centered attack. The incident has left the community in shock and mourning.
The investigation reveals that 52‑year‑old Ryan Willis McFarland, a resident of Muscatine, was involved in the killings. After the shooting, police located McFarland on a city trail and he took his own life during the confrontation, according to Police Chief Anthony Kies.
The superintendent of the Muscatine Community School District, Clint Christopher, stated that two of the victims were students, though he withheld their names, ages, or grade levels. Another portion of the victims were school employees, said Christopher in a message to the district. “Our hearts are broken for the families, friends, colleagues, classmates, and all those affected by this unimaginable loss,” he wrote.
For student support, the school district activated counselors for the remainder of the week. The district’s community has been called to stay united and show collective compassion amid the heartbreaking loss.
Police have not yet released motive details. However, it is known that McFarland had a criminal record. The community is awaiting further information from state investigator and law‑enforcement agencies, who are expected to share more specifics during a Tuesday evening vigil and by the following day.
The incident marks the sixth family mass killing recorded in Iowa this year, according to a mass‑killing database maintained by The Associated Press and Northeastern University. Nationwide, 13 mass killings have been documented so far in 2026.

Officers later discovered the bodies of two additional relatives of McFarland at separate locations: one was found in his home and the other inside a business. Law enforcement confirms McFarland's self‑immolation occurred while officers were attempting to speak with him.
