The US State Department says it has 'credible reports' that Hamas is planning an 'imminent' attack on civilians in Gaza, which it says would violate the ceasefire agreement.
A statement released on Saturday warned that a planned attack against Palestinians would be a 'direct and grave' violation of the ceasefire and 'undermine the significant progress achieved through mediation efforts.'
The state department has not provided further details on the alleged attack or the sources of the reports.
The first phase of the ceasefire deal between Hamas and Israel is currently underway, involving the return of hostages and deceased persons.
As part of the agreement, Israel freed 250 Palestinian prisoners, and the US has notified other guarantors of the peace agreement—Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey—regarding Hamas' obligations.
'Should Hamas proceed with this attack, measures will be taken to protect the people of Gaza and preserve the integrity of the ceasefire,' the statement said.
Hamas has not responded to the US statement. Previously, President Donald Trump warned against civilian casualties in Gaza, emphasizing that continued violence could lead to military action.
Recent reports also highlighted incidents of violence, including a public execution by Hamas gunmen. The situation remains tense, with ongoing conflict claiming numerous lives on both sides.
