In brief

In a rapid response to Tropical Cyclone Dana, which is making its way toward eastern India, authorities have evacuated an estimated one million people ahead of its expected landfall. Currently categorized as a Category 1 hurricane with wind speeds nearing 75 mph, Dana poses significant risks of flooding and landslides for the vulnerable coastal communities of West Bengal and Odisha.

On Thursday, officials reported that about one million individuals have been relocated to over 5,000 emergency shelters in Odisha, with additional evacuations taking place in West Bengal. The cyclone's trajectory indicates that it will reach Odisha’s coastline by late Thursday night, raising concerns reminiscent of the catastrophic cyclone of 1999 that resulted in nearly 10,000 deaths.Suresh Pujari, Odisha’s minister for revenue and disaster management, confirmed that extensive evacuation plans were swiftly executed in light of past experiences. Recently established disaster management systems, alongside better infrastructure and preparedness, have significantly improved the state’s response to such natural disasters. In light of the storm, Indian authorities have issued warnings of possible cyclonic conditions and torrential rainfalls, forecasting 2 to 4 inches of rain in coastal areas, with some regions expected to receive over eight inches. Transportation services have been heavily impacted, with multiple flights canceled at Kolkata and Biju Patnaik International Airport, and more than 100 trains suspended nationwide. In preparation, schools in several districts have suspended classes and exams, and local authorities have prohibited all fishing and marine activities in the Bay of Bengal until the storm has passed. The full ramifications of Dana are yet to be seen, but officials are on high alert for potential damage to infrastructure, homes, and agriculture in the affected areas.
