In brief
In the midst of escalating conflict in Gaza, families with disabilities endure extreme hardships, from forced evacuations to scarce resources, highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian attention.
In the wake of ongoing conflict in Gaza, the plight of families with disabilities has become increasingly dire. As evacuations were ordered by the Israeli military, many rushed to escape danger, often leaving essential mobility aids behind. Zuhair Abu Odeh, a father who recently fled with his 9-year-old daughter, Lara, a wheelchair user, embodies the struggles faced by such families. Forced to carry Lara for over four hours after their wheelchair became stuck in a damaged road, the Abu Odeh family found themselves in a makeshift shelter in Khan Younis, sharing their harrowing tale of survival. The war has displaced approximately two million residents of Gaza, provoking daily battles for basic necessities like food, clean water, and electricity. However, the impact on those with disabilities is particularly severe. Shortages of mobility devices, such as wheelchairs and hearing aids, alongside the destruction of accessible infrastructure, have exacerbated their suffering. “We’re living through impossible times,” Mr. Abu Odeh lamented, as he reflected on the family’s grim circumstances in a region where accessibility features have succumbed to relentless bombardment.Since acquiring a new wheelchair for Lara in February, the family's situation has improved slightly; nevertheless, navigating the rugged terrain of temporary camps remains a significant challenge. The horrors of daily life, marked by uncertainty and trauma, paint a stark picture of the humanitarian crisis that continues to unfold in Gaza, urging the global community to focus on the vulnerable populations caught in the crossfire.
