In brief

As of Sunday, only 35 of the estimated 270 victims from the Air India Flight 171 catastrophe have been identified and returned to their grieving families. The disaster, which occurred shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad bound for Gatwick Airport near London, involved a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner loaded with a significant amount of fuel—125,000 liters, equivalent to over 33,000 gallons. The aftermath has been complicated by high temperatures at the crash site, believed to have soared to an alarming 1,500 degrees Celsius or 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit.

Sanghvi, the director of the local forensic laboratory, these extreme conditions have severely damaged the remains, complicating DNA collection and analysis crucial for identifying victims. By late Sunday, only a small fraction of bodies had been positively identified for mourning families, highlighting the heartbreaking ordeal surrounding the incident. As time passes without conclusive results, the emotional toll on relatives is swelling, with many expressing their desperation for closure amidst the complex identification process.
