Atlanta, GA - Fulton County, Georgia, has initiated federal legal proceedings to reclaim ballots and documents related to the 2020 election that were seized by the FBI during a recent search of its election facility. The motion filed by county officials, including Chairman Robb Pitts, requests not only the items' return but also the unsealing of the affidavit from a law enforcement agent that justified the search warrant.
The FBI executed the search on January 28 at Fulton County's main election site, located in Union City, targeting materials linked to claims of election irregularities that have persisted since Donald Trump's narrow loss in Georgia to Joe Biden. Many in the Democratic Party have criticized the involvement of federal law enforcement in local elections, suggesting it may be politically motivated.
Pitts emphasized the county's faith in its election process, asserting that Fulton has successfully conducted 17 elections since the disputed 2020 election without incident. He expressed concerns regarding the integrity of the ongoing investigation and highlighted Trump’s insistence on electoral fraud without substantiated evidence.
“What they’re doing with the ballots that they have now, we don’t know, but if they’re counted fairly and honestly, the results will be the same,” Pitts stated, underlining the need for transparency surrounding the seized documents.
The FBI's raid resulted in the collection of hundreds of boxes containing various election materials, including ballots, tabulator tapes, and voter rolls. County officials report they were not informed of the rationale for the federal government's interest in this documentation.
Recent remarks by Trump, where he called for a national takeover of electoral processes, have intensified alarms regarding federal involvement in state elections. The warrant served to Fulton County specified that the FBI was looking for comprehensive election-related records, heightening fears over election oversight integrity across Georgia.
