Five Missing After Fire Devastates Swiss Alpine Restaurant

A large blaze broke out on the second floor of a mixed‑use building at night in the alpine town of Thusis, leaving the structure utterly destroyed.

Graubünden cantonal police have confirmed that five people are missing after the fire, while 14 others were rescued and taken to hospitals in Chur, Thusis, Ilanz and Zurich; two sustained serious injuries, another two moderate ones and four minor wounds.

The emergency call went out at 22:00 GMT on Thursday, and almost 100 firefighters responded to the wreck. Because the stairwell collapsed, the roof had to be opened with a crane in order to access the site.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation by police and the public prosecutor’s office, with all available resources focused on locating missing residents and preventing further damage.
