In the coastal city of Cox's Bazar, a sudden landslide struck a girls' school inside the world's largest Rohingya refugee settlement, killing seven students and a teacher.
The mud and heavy debris buried the makeshift building on Wednesday afternoon, forcing rescuers to pull 13 people out of the mud, 8 of whom did not survive. Authorities say the victims ranged in age from seven to twelve and that five children were rushed to hospital with injuries.
The disaster has come amid months of relentless monsoon rainfall that has triggered multiple fatal landslides across the region, with at least eight refugees lost in earlier slips since Sunday. More than one million Rohingya, who fled a 2017 military crackdown in Myanmar, live in precarious tarpaulin shelters on steep hillsides and are especially vulnerable to flooding and slides.
Officials in Bangladesh have issued warnings and begun evacuating families from high‑risk areas, as weather forecasts predict further rain and potential landslides for the coming days.
