Germany’s armed forces (Bundeswehr) confirmed that two drones were seen on Thursday evening hovering over a base in Mechernich, near Bonn, that houses components for US‑made Patriot air‑defence systems.
German military police were deployed to the site before the matter was handed over to local police. The sighting follows an explosive‑laden device that was discovered at Leipzig/Halle airport, a key NATO and German military hub also used by Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt warned that Germany is a “daily target of hybrid warfare” despite stating it is not at war. He added that the country has become a regular target of “destabilising” attacks.
The incident is part of a broader pattern of drone sightings near European military bases and airports supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. Some officials point fingers at Russia, which has consistently denied involvement.
Investigations are ongoing to determine how a drone carrying explosives reached the Leipzig runway. Meanwhile, Ukraine has pleaded for additional Patriot missile supplies, citing an interceptor shortage that is costing lives.
European leaders have discussed a continent‑wide “drone wall” of air defences to enhance security against such threats.
