'Clair Obscur: Expedition 33' has been crowned Game of the Year at this year's Game Awards.
This French-developed role-playing game (RPG) dominated the event by winning nine of the ten categories it was nominated for, including Best Narrative, Best Music, and Best Performance.
Competing against notable titles such as 'Death Stranding 2', the Nintendo platformer 'Donkey Kong Bananza', indie gems 'Hollow Knight: Silksong' and 'Hades 2', as well as 'Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2', 'Clair Obscur' emerged triumphant in the end.
During the awards ceremony hosted in Los Angeles, viewers also caught a glimpse of upcoming games including two new 'Tomb Raider' games and the sequel 'Control Resonant'.
'Clair Obscur' takes place in a world where a supernatural entity called The Paintress halts the aging of its inhabitants. The narrative follows a group of adventurers determined to destroy her, praised for its heartfelt storytelling and classic turn-based battle system.
The game is a debut project for developer Sandfall Interactive, established by former Ubisoft employees passionate about crafting their dream title. Director Guillaume Broche, accepting the award while wearing a red beret and striped t-shirt, expressed gratitude to his team and the supportive community.
Highlighting the challenges they faced, Broche acknowledged the contributions of tutorial makers on platforms like YouTube that assisted them in developing the game. 'Clair Obscur' also garnered the title of Best Role-Playing Game, Best Independent Game, and Best Debut Indie Game.
Jennifer English, one of the three nominated actresses in the Best Performance category, was awarded for her role as Maelle, dedicating her recognition to neurodivergent individuals in the audience.
While it was a celebratory night for 'Clair Obscur', the game only missed out on two awards - 'Battlefield 6' for Best Audio Design and 'Wuthering Waves' for the fan-voted Player's Voice category. Other notable winners included 'Donkey Kong Bananza' for Best Family Game and 'Hollow Knight: Silksong' for Best Action-Adventure.
This year's Game Awards included significant announcements for future games, ensuring that developers' voices are fairly represented despite past criticisms about advertising prioritization over accolades.
