Christian Eriksen Back at Home and "Doing Well" After On-Field Collapse
The 34‑year‑old Denmark midfield icon posted a statement on Instagram, saying he is "doing well" and has begun his recovery after the sudden collapse in a friendly against Ukraine on Saturday. He was treated after regaining consciousness and spent the night in hospital, but the medicine has kept him safe.
The match in Odense had been cut short at 65 minutes but was abandoned shortly after, when the Danish midfielder managed to walk off the pitch following observation from medical staff and team doctors. Eriksen is now at home with his family, enjoying a brief vacation and playing football with his children, the national team doctor added.
Eriksen’s heart problem dates back to a heart‑stop during Euro 2020 against Finland in 2021, when his implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) delivered a lifesaving shock. The ICD is a small pacemaker‑like device that continuously monitors heart rhythm and provides rapid treatment if a dangerous rhythm develops.
After his 2021 collapse, Eriksen returned to play with Brentford in 2022 and eventually signed for Wolverhampton in the Premier League, where the ICD regulations are different from Serie A, which forced Inter Milan to terminate his contract. He has been praised for his courage and for showing that players with ICDs can still compete at high levels.
Denmark’s squad were visibly emotional after Eriksen’s collapse, forming a protective ring around him on the pitch, while his teammates and the opposition players expressed support for the midfielder’s speedy recovery. The friendly was halted after general medical concerns, with both teams applauding fans upon leaving the field.
Eriksen’s recovery is a positive development for those facing cardiac conditions, showing that modern medical technology can provide safety and that professional footballers can still enjoy a career after a serious heart event.
