In brief

Authorities in New Zealand have announced the suspension of the search for three climbers who went missing while attempting to conquer Aoraki/Mount Cook, the country's tallest peak. As conditions deteriorated, officials have concluded that the climbers are likely dead.

On December 6, 2024, Commander Inspector Vicki Walker of the New Zealand Police stated that the search efforts for the missing climbers, two of whom are American citizens and one a Canadian national, were halted following the grim assessment. The climbers—Kurt Blair, 56, and Carlos Romero, 50—initially arrived at Aoraki/Mount Cook for their ascent, but failed to return as expected after a weekend climb. Their charter flight scheduled for Monday morning did not see them board, triggering search operations that began that same day.The treacherous weather conditions reportedly complicated the search, severely limiting visibility and access. Despite these challenges, search teams uncovered various personal effects belonging to the men, including a jacket, an ice axe, and energy gels, alongside footprints leading toward the Zurbriggen Ridge—the steep section of the mountain where they were last unaccounted for.In a statement communicated to the public, Walker noted, “After reviewing the duration of their absence, the lack of communication, the items recovered, and today’s reconnaissance, we do not believe the men have survived.” It was further established that both Americans were certified mountain guides through the American Mountain Guides Association, which underscores their professional background and experience in alpine environments. With families of the climbers being notified about the situation, search operations are currently at a standstill, marking a tragic and sobering moment for the climbing community.
