In brief
Hamas declared on Friday that it will free three hostages, including Keith Siegel, a 65-year-old American-Israeli, along with two other Israeli men, Yarden Bibas, aged 35, and Ofer Kalderon, aged 54. This decision is part of a larger cease-fire agreement, which has seen a reduction in hostilities between the group and Israel for nearly two weeks. In exchange, Israel is prepared to release numerous Palestinian prisoners currently held in its jails.
The three hostages were captured amid the turmoil initiated by the Hamas-led offensive on October 7, 2023. The attack resulted in the tragic loss of around 1,200 lives, primarily civilians, and approximately 250 individuals were taken captive. In an ongoing military response, Israeli forces have conducted extensive operations in Gaza, leading to over 45,000 casualties according to local health reports. This latest hostage exchange is part of a multi-phase deal wherein Hamas agreed to release at least 33 hostages out of the 97 still in captivity over the forthcoming weeks, in return for the release of more than 1,500 Palestinians incarcerated by Israel. So far, about ten Israeli captives have been released along with five Thai workers who were also taken hostage during the initial attacks in October.Among the victims, Yarden Bibas's family has captured national attention, symbolizing the brutality of the assault. Bibas had not only been taken prisoner but was separated from his wife and two young children, whom Hamas later claimed had died in an Israeli airstrike—an assertion that Israeli officials have not verified.Siegel was taken hostage from Kfar Aza, close to Gaza. His wife, Aviva Siegel, had been held captive alongside him until November when she became one of over 100 hostages released under a previous cease-fire arrangement. As tensions remain high in the region, the prospects of this hostage exchange and ongoing negotiations could greatly impact the future of Israeli-Palestinian relations.
