In brief

In Oaxaca, Mexico, a century-old tradition captivates locals and visitors alike with extraordinary radish artistry as part of the Night of the Radishes celebration.

Every December 23, the vibrant city of Oaxaca grinds to a halt, not for a festive feast, but for a unique celebration—a radish-carving competition that draws crowds from far and wide. Known as the Noche de Rábanos, this beloved event, which has been running for over 120 years, showcases the artistic talents of local residents who transform this humble root vegetable into awe-inspiring creations. This year’s winning entry, crafted by Carlos David Vásquez López and his family, highlighted Oaxacan culinary traditions in an imaginative display that wowed judges and attendees alike. Visitors stood in line for blocks, some waiting over three hours for a glimpse of the fantastical radish sculptures, which included themes such as Nativity scenes and tribute displays for Día de los Muertos, as well as representations of Indigenous myths.“It’s a wonderful opportunity to play with food,” expressed Maria de los Angeles Aragón García, a local visual arts student participating for the first time with her two friends. “As a child, we were told not to play with our food, but here we are invited to create art with it.” The extraordinary sights and sounds of this annual event reflect the rich cultural tapestry of Oaxaca, underscoring the city's reputation as a hub for culinary delights and artistic expression. As the sun sets and the festivities unfold, the Night of the Radishes not only celebrates a local vegetable but also honors a cherished tradition that continues to bring together families and friends year after year.
