In brief

Actor Imran Khan, known for his 2008 rom-com, has been issued a notice to leave India by 28 October after partaking in a protest demanding the resignation of the chief election commissioner. The actor holds an Overseas Citizen of India card, a status that allows travel but not voting or contesting elections. Police claim Khan violated protest laws, while his lawyer argues no such prohibition exists for OCI holders. The notice comes amid widespread youth‑led demonstrations across Mumbai and Delhi, calling for major electoral reforms. Khan is set to return to the screen with a new Netflix film after a decade-long break.

Actor Imran Khan, the nephew of Bollywood legend Aamir Khan, has received a formal order to leave India by 28 October after participating in a protest at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan demanding the resignation of the chief election commissioner.

Khan, an American citizen, holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card which permits travel and residence in India but barring him from voting or contesting elections. Lawyers for the actor argue that this status does not preclude him from joining public demonstrations.

Police described Khan’s involvement as a violation of protest regulations, noting that he had been detained briefly on 10 October along with other demonstrators. Khan has indicated that he will contest the directive in the Bombay High Court.

The protest was organized by a youth‑led movement known as the Cockroach Janta Party seeking electoral reforms amid allegations of vote fraud, a claim denied by India’s election panel. Thousands gathered in Mumbai and Delhi demanding the chief election commissioner step down ahead of forthcoming state elections.

In addition to the legal dispute, Khan is preparing for a return to acting with a Netflix feature slated for release this year after a more than ten‑year break. He had first gained prominence in 2008 with the romantic comedy Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na and has since appeared in films such as I Hate Luv Storys and Delhi Belly.
