In brief

Recent air operations mark Israel's efforts to dismantle Syrian military power and stabilize its borders post-Assad regime.

Israel conducted a series of aggressive airstrikes on Syria's coastline late Sunday, according to reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The airstrikes, described as the most severe in over a decade, focused on military positions previously held by the Syrian Army, including missile storage facilities and air defense units, following the ousting of the Assad regime by rebel factions. The air raids resulted in multiple explosions as missiles detonated within storage warehouses, creating further blasts. In total, there were recorded 18 consecutive airstrikes aimed at degrading the military capabilities of Syria, which has seen significant internal turmoil recently. Earlier in the day, Israeli forces also targeted military radars at Deir al-Zour's airbase in eastern Syria.Israeli military spokespeople have historically refrained from commenting on specific strikes but assert that their military interventions are directed at preventing extremist groups from acquiring powerful weaponry. Since the rise of rebel governance, Israel has engaged in over 450 strikes against Syrian targets, aiming to obliterate naval and air force assets throughout the war-torn nation. On the diplomatic front, Israel's government has received approval to expand settlements in the Golan Heights as part of a $11 million initiative to increase the region's population. This development follows the recent shifts in control on Israel's borders with Syria. Israel captured the Golan Heights during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, with its status still disputed under international law.Rebel coalition leader Ahmed al-Shara responded to Israel's actions by asserting that the ongoing conflict in Syria should not justify land seizures. Despite the challenging circumstances, al-Shara emphasized that Syria must pursue diplomatic resolutions to maintain stability and prioritize reconstruction efforts, rather than engage in additional confrontations that could exacerbate the destruction already faced.
