In brief

A 5.4‑magnitude earthquake shook the northeastern part of Chiba Prefecture, near Tokyo, on the morning of October 29 2026. German research centre GFZ confirmed the depth at 49.4 km, while Japan’s meteorological agency first reported a preliminary magnitude of 5.5, later revised to 5.4, and no tsunami warning was issued.

A 5.4‑magnitude earthquake rocked the northeast coast of Honshu, Japan, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported at 15:07 GMT on Wednesday, October 29, 2026. The GFZ identified the epicenter at a depth of 49.4 km, roughly 35.67° N, 140.59° E.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued an earthquake alert at 12:07 a.m. local time, listing a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 that later was revised to 5.4. The depth was cited as about 50 km, and the event was assigned a lower‑5 intensity on the Japanese seismic scale.

Both agencies confirmed the quake felt across Chiba and neighboring prefectures—Tokyo, Tochigi, Ibaraki, Saitama—and reported no tsunami threat or warning.

The difference in reported magnitude—5.4 by GFZ versus the initial 5.5 by Kyodo—a points to the preliminary nature of early assessments. Likewise the depth values, 49.4 km (GFZ) versus about 52 km (Japan Meteorological Agency), remain unconfirmed until further analysis is released.

Local residents reported “lower 5” shaking in Yokoshibahikari, while other parts of Chiba experienced weaker tremors. The Musashi Sea and Pacific coasts downstream remained calm, as the Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed no tsunami hazard.
