EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Fire crews were engaged in a battle against massive flames at a Chevron refinery located just outside Los Angeles on Thursday night. Governor Gavin Newsom's office confirmed the fire on social media platform X, noting the scale of the incident. As of now, the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, and there have been no reports of injuries. El Segundo police and fire departments declined to provide comments on the situation. 'Our office is coordinating in real time with local and state agencies to protect the surrounding community and ensure public safety,' stated Newsom's office in their announcement. The refinery has been operational since 1911 and is situated about 15 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, near the busy Los Angeles International Airport.
