In brief
China's move to halt exports of key minerals is a reaction to U.S. policies, raising concerns over global supply chains.
China announced on Tuesday that it would prohibit the export of select rare minerals to the United States, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing technological rivalry between the two nations. This announcement came just a day after the Biden administration tightened restrictions on the sale of advanced technology to China. The list of banned items includes gallium, germanium, and antimony, essential materials commonly employed in military applications, according to China's Ministry of Commerce. Additionally, the export of graphite will now be subjected to more rigorous scrutiny. As the dominant producer of critical minerals globally, China has been steadily tightening its control over these resources as a form of retaliation against U.S. export measures. Notably, since October, the Chinese government has mandated that exporters provide detailed accounts of how these minerals will be utilized within Western supply chains. This strategic move aims to ensure that no sensitive technologies are inadvertently transferred to foreign adversaries. On the American side, the Biden administration's recent actions reflect a broader strategy to curtail China's access to pivotal technologies. This includes a ban on specific types of semiconductor chips and machinery, along with adding over 100 Chinese companies to a restricted-trade list. Such efforts are part of a concerted effort to maintain U.S. technological supremacy and prevent China from overtaking it in advanced technology sectors.China responded to the U.S. measures by labeling them as "illegal," asserting that such actions significantly undermine international trade norms and create instability within global supply chains. Lin Jian, a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that these practices jeopardize the interests of nations worldwide. This unfolding scenario marks yet another chapter in the continually evolving landscape of U.S.-China relations, with both nations wary of potential repercussions that might arise from their economic confrontations.
