Senator Daines Aims to Bridge Communication Gap Between Trump and China
Montana Senator Steve Daines is working to facilitate talks between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping amid trade tensions.
In light of ongoing trade tensions and the absence of high-level discussions between the U.S. and China since President Trump's second term began, Senator Steve Daines of Montana has stepped forward as a potential mediator. On Saturday, Daines met with China’s Vice Premier He Lifeng, who is responsible for overseeing key economic issues, and is scheduled to meet Premier Li Qiang, China’s second-highest official, the following day.
In an interview following his discussions with Vice Premier He, Daines stated that he conveyed the necessity for China to take substantial action in halting the exportation of fentanyl precursors. "I had a conversation with President Trump before my trip, and he was supportive of my efforts to relay his 'America First' message and highlight the importance of addressing the fentanyl crisis, particularly the role China plays in preventing these shipments to Mexican cartels," Daines mentioned.
Chinese officials have contended that the fentanyl crisis is largely due to an American issue with drug demand and that they have enacted measures to limit fentanyl exports. Recently, China’s cabinet issued a report detailing its measures to combat fentanyl trafficking, which American officials are currently reviewing.
Additionally, Daines expressed his intentions to set the stage for a future meeting between President Trump and Xi Jinping. "This trip serves as a preliminary effort to pave the way for a significant meeting between President Xi and President Trump. While the timing and location remain uncertain, the groundwork is being laid," he noted.
