Tram Collision in Strasbourg Leaves 68 Injured; Investigation Underway

A chaotic tram collision at Strasbourg's central station on Saturday resulted in 68 injuries, prompting an official investigation into the unexpected incident.

Emergency responders reported non-fatal injuries ranging from traumas to fractures as authorities work to uncover the events leading to the crash.

In a daunting incident that rattled the heart of Strasbourg, two trams collided on Saturday, leaving 68 passengers injured, according to local authorities. The accident occurred at the city’s central station, where one tram reportedly moved backwards down a slope and crashed into a stationary tram. Eyewitness accounts detail scenes of panic with smoke rising and alarms blaring as passengers struggled to comprehend the chaos unfolding around them.

The prefecture's spokesman confirmed that an investigation has been launched, ruling out intentionality behind the collision. Johan, a bystander, recounted, “We heard a big impact, a big bang,” while another witness described how the tram doors flew off upon impact.

In response to the incident, a significant security perimeter was established near the scene to facilitate emergency operations. The Bas-Rhin region's Fire and Rescue Service took to social media platform X, advising the public to steer clear of the area to ensure a swift response from emergency crews.

Rene Cellier, head of the rescue services, discussed the types of injuries sustained, noting that while many were classified as "mostly trauma," others included specific injuries like scalp wounds, clavicle fractures, and knee sprains. Additionally, Cellier highlighted that around 100 people, though not significantly injured, received medical attention as a precautionary measure.

In total, the response team included 50 emergency vehicles and 130 firefighters, illustrating the seriousness of the situation. Emmanuel Auneau, director of the public transport authority, CTS, stated that while both tram drivers emerged physically unharmed, they were understandably shaken by what occurred. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks associated with public transport and highlights the ongoing need for safety measures in busy urban environments.
