Europe Faces Unprecedented Threat to Freedom, Warns Macron
French President calls for surge in defense spending amid escalating geopolitical tensions.
In a warning to Europe about the rising risks to its liberty, President Emmanuel Macron of France announced significant plans to increase defense expenditures. Speaking in Paris, Macron declared that Europe is facing an unprecedented threat stemming from complex global dynamics. He proposed raising France's defense budget by €3.5 billion (£3 billion) in 2024, with an additional €3 billion by 2027.
In outlining these initiatives, he condemned the "imperialist policies" of Russia amid ongoing conflict that erupted following Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. By 2027, Macron aims to double France's military budget, representing a leap from €32 billion in 2017 to an anticipated €64 billion, several years ahead of previous projections. However, these proposals remain subject to government approval.
Macron underscored the necessity of power in maintaining freedom, stating, "To be free in this world, you must be feared. To be feared, you must be powerful," particularly poignant ahead of France's Bastille Day celebrations. He highlighted the resurgence of nuclear capabilities globally and the increased incidence of major conflicts, referencing US military actions in Iran, tensions between India and Pakistan, and fluctuating American support for Ukraine.
Last month, NATO allies committed to increasing defense spending to 5% of GDP annually, a notable rise from the prior target of 2%. The UK's defense review has also signaled a resolute message toward Moscow. On the ground, French Army Chief Thierry Burkhard asserted that Russia perceives France as its "main adversary in Europe," identifying the ongoing situation in Ukraine as pivotal for determining the futures of various European nations.
With the French government set to announce next year's budget shortly, Prime Minister Francois Bayrou's presentation will be closely watched amid the backdrop of these pressing defense discussions.
